In the Biochemical Lab at Center for Nanoscience and Technologies at Italian Institute of Technologies in Milano the researchers deal with the characterization of the tridimensional structure of proteins of interest for different applications such as drug design, study of interactions among biological molecules and so on.

The researchers of Biochemical Lab of Center for Nanoscience and Technologies at Italian Institute of Technologies, use a SONICA Ultrasonic bath that generates ultrasonic cavitation with a special ultrasonic generator equipped with an ultrasonic oscillator with Sweep System Technology. This ultrasonic bath with a special stainless steel holder designed to sonicate small volumes of samples (roughly 200 micro-litres) containing bacteria is possible to have the better conditions for cells break.

After ultrasonic sonication, the researchers can centrifuge their samples in order to recover the soluble protein fraction containing the protein of interest correctly folded and funtioning. Furthermore they can load these fractions on SDS gel in order to detect the best sonication condition to obtain a well separated soluble fraction.
